Chapter

Thirteen

THERE WERE horse stables behind the house. I hadn’t known they were there, but I had also never been behind the house. That I remembered.

My memory couldn’t come back fast enough. I stood outside watching Branko prepare the large black horses.

Ramone wasn’t here yet, but he had said he’d meet us. He’d come up to my room while I was grabbing my bag, checking to make sure I had everything I needed. I had thrown in a couple of bottles of water before following his directions to the large stable.

Branko was fastening a saddle on a second horse and glanced at me before resuming the job.

“Are there roads here?” I shook my head. “I mean for cars. Are there cars here?”

He peered at me over the side of the horse. “Yes. Not here though, no cars. We’re taking these so we can move quicker. It’d take too long to walk.”

“So, Ramone has a car? You guys have cars?” There was still so much I didn’t understand.

He laughed. “Yes. Just not here.”

Picturing Ramone behind the wheel of a car made my brain feel funny. I couldn’t reconcile the image I had of him, the man I knew, with driving a car. Where did he keep his car?

He raised an eyebrow at me with an amused expression on his face and I had to smile. They really couldn’t expect me to not have a lot of questions.

“Do you have a driver’s license?”

His shoulders sagged. “No.” He went back to what he was doing.

“How about at home?” I walked over to the other horse and ran my hand down its side.

“No.”

I stopped. “How old are you?”

“Thirty-six.”

“I know I have a lot of questions. Sorry.” I turned and peered out the entryway, expecting to see Ramone at any moment.

The hay on the floor rustled under my feet and Branko led both horses outside as I followed.

“It's okay.” He glanced at me. “I’m just not used to all the questions. You already know all this stuff, I think.”

“I’m not sure what I know and don’t know. It's annoying. Some stuff has been coming back lately but I still have a lot of gaps.”

“Kiara,” Branko said, voice warning. “Please be careful.”

“Of course. Thank you.”

Movement caught my eye. Ramone was headed our way, a door shutting behind him as he started making his way over to us.

“You may have just stuck to this area before, I don’t know. If I was in your shoes, I’m sure I’d have a lot to ask, myself.”

He took something out of his pocket and fed it to the horses, one neighing with impatience while waiting for his turn as the other ate the treat.

“Ramone doesn’t talk about it, about before. He’s told me a little, but I don’t really know what the two of you did together.” My face fell, considering his words and Ramone’s lack of them, when it came to the subject of myself.

“I do know he seems to care about you,” Branko said, watching Ramone’s approaching figure. “He might even think he loves you.
